What counts as HD
HD is about pixels: how many a photo has across and down. A photo can have enough pixels and still look poor, so this converter cleans it too.

Cleaned on the way up
Stretching a small photo only makes its flaws bigger. Here AI redraws the photo four times larger and takes out what spoils it on the way, so a low-quality photo comes out HD and clear. A photo check picks the strength, Light, Medium or Strong, and you can change it.
Grain from dim light
The coloured speckles of indoor and night photos are taken out, and skin, hair and fabric keep their texture.
Blocks left by chat apps
The squares and halos a photo gets each time it is sent and saved again are smoothed away.
Edges a little soft
The slight softness of a cheap lens or a small camera becomes crisp edges, so a blurry photo looks clearer.

Keep it HD when you send it
WhatsApp sends photos in standard quality unless you ask for HD, and that makes them smaller again: your HD photo can arrive smaller than you made it. Tap HD before you send, set the photo upload quality to HD in Settings, Storage and data, or send the photo as a document.

What happens on your phone
Real-ESRGAN, an open-source AI model trained on real-world photos, works on your photo a small square at a time, on your phone's or computer's graphics chip where it has one. There's no prompt to write and nothing is invented: it sharpens and cleans what is in your photo, and doesn't redraw the person into someone else.
The converter downloads once, about 18 MB, and your browser keeps it; your photo is never sent anywhere.
Where HD falls short
- Faces aren't rebuilt: a face only a few pixels wide stays rough.
- Strong motion blur and badly out-of-focus photos improve only a little.
- A photo under 480 pixels gets the most, 4 times, and stays under 1,920.
- Colours and brightness stay as they are; for those, use the image enhancer.
- On a phone without a graphics chip, a photo can take a few minutes.

A photo under 480 pixels gets the most, 4 times, and stays smaller; a photo already 1,920 pixels or more keeps its size and is only cleaned.

Does my photo get uploaded?
No. It runs inside your browser. The first time, your browser downloads the AI model, about 18 MB, and keeps it; your photo is never sent anywhere.
Can a blurry, low-quality photo become HD?
Grain, JPG blocks and mild blur, yes. Strong motion blur and badly out-of-focus photos improve only a little, and very small faces stay rough: it cleans them but can't rebuild them.
Can I convert a photo to 4K?
Not here: HD stops at 1,920 pixels. 4K is 3,840 by 2,160; the image upscaler makes a photo 2, 3 or 4 times larger, so a 960 by 540 photo at 4 times is exactly 4K.
Will WhatsApp keep my photo in HD?
Only if you send it in HD. In standard quality WhatsApp makes photos smaller again. Tap HD before sending, choose HD quality for photo uploads in Settings, Storage and data, or send the photo as a document.
How long does it take on a phone?
Usually under a minute on a computer. On a phone without a graphics chip it can take a few minutes, because the work happens on your phone. You can cancel at any time.
