The formats compared
| Format | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photos; every website and form accepts it | Can't keep transparent areas: they turn white |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, signatures and text | Photos make large files |
| WebP | Websites and apps: often the smallest file | A few older programs and forms don't accept it |
| HEIC | Photos on iPhones | Many websites, forms and Windows apps can't open it |
| AVIF | Very small files on modern websites | Not every app or form accepts it yet |
ChobiKit opens all five and saves as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Popular conversions
HEIC to JPG
Turn iPhone photos into JPGs that any website, form or Windows computer can open.
PNG to JPG
Make screenshots and graphics smaller and accepted everywhere. Transparent areas become white.
PNG or JPG to WebP
Make a website's images smaller so its pages load faster. WebP keeps transparent areas.
WebP to JPG or PNG
Use a WebP saved from a website in an app or form that doesn't accept WebP.
Lossy and lossless
JPG and WebP, as ChobiKit saves them, are lossy: they leave out fine detail the eye barely notices, which makes photos much smaller. PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly, which is best for text, lines and signatures, but makes large photo files.
Converting a JPG to PNG can't bring back detail the JPG already lost; it only makes the file bigger.
Hidden details are removed
Photos from phones and cameras carry hidden details, such as where and when they were taken and which phone took them. Converting writes a new file from the pixels alone, so none of that goes with it. Converting a JPG to JPG is a quick way to clean a photo before you share it.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I convert?
You can open JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images, and iPhone HEIC photos in browsers that can open them, and save them as JPG, PNG or WebP.
How do I convert PNG to JPG?
Choose your PNG, pick JPG and press Convert. JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas become white.
How do I convert an image to WebP?
Choose your image, pick WebP and press Convert. WebP files are often smaller than PNG and JPG files, and they keep transparent areas.
Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG?
Yes, in browsers that can open HEIC, such as Safari. iPhones also usually change photos to JPG when you pick them in the browser.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes, up to 10 at a time, downloaded together as a ZIP file.
Does converting remove the photo's location?
Yes. The new file keeps none of the original's hidden data, such as the place where the photo was taken.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser, and your images are never sent to a server.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
