When PNG is the right format
- Screenshots, logos, signatures and pictures with text: PNG keeps sharp lines and letters exactly.
- Pictures with see-through parts, such as stickers and cut-outs: PNG keeps the transparency.
- Apps, sites and forms that ask for a PNG file.
What converting to PNG does
PNG is lossless: every pixel is saved exactly as it is. A PNG made from a JPG looks the same as the JPG, but it can't bring back detail the JPG already left out.
A PNG of a photo is large, often several times the size of the JPG. For a photo to email or upload, JPG is usually the better choice.
Getting a good PNG
- Choose up to 10 images and convert them together. They download as one ZIP file.
- Saving a PNG as PNG again keeps the picture and removes hidden details, such as where a photo was taken.
- iPhone HEIC photos open in browsers that support them; iPhones usually turn photos into JPG when you pick them.
- An animated WebP is saved as its first frame.
