What fits in 1 MB
| Picture | As JPG | As WebP |
|---|---|---|
| A 16 MP camera photo, 3:2 | about 3900 by 2600 px | the whole photo |
| An 8 MP portrait, 3:4 | the whole photo | the whole photo |
Measured at good quality (80 %) on a 16 MP camera photo, the largest ChobiKit works on, and an 8 MP portrait. Bigger photos, such as 48 or 50 MP phone photos, are brought down to 16 MP when you open them.
When 1 MB is asked for
- Upload limits on application, visa and insurance forms ("max 1 MB").
- Email, where several photos of a few MB each would be too heavy.
- Website and blog uploads that refuse files over 1 MB.
Tips for 1 MB
- Phone photos are often 3 to 8 MB. At 1 MB they usually keep their full size in pixels or close to it, so the difference is hard to see.
- Type 1000 in the size box on the main compressor for the same result: 1 MB here means 1,000 KB.
- Several photos? Choose up to 10 at once and download them as one ZIP.
- If a form asks for both 1 MB and a pixel size, resize first, then compress.
Frequently asked questions
How do I resize or compress an image to 1 MB?
Choose your image and press Compress: on this page the size is already set to 1 MB. Then download the smaller file.
Will the file be exactly 1 MB?
As close as it can get without going over. ChobiKit tries different qualities and keeps the best one that stays under 1 MB, so the file may come out a little smaller.
Is 1 MB counted as 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?
Forms differ, so ChobiKit keeps the file under 1,000,000 bytes, which passes either way.
Will a 1 MB photo still be good quality?
Yes. A 16 MP camera photo stays about 3,900 by 2,600 pixels as JPG, and an 8 MP portrait keeps its full size. That is enough to print at 13 by 9 inches or show on a 4K screen.
Can I compress a 10 MB photo to 1 MB?
Yes. Choose it and press Compress. Photos over 16 megapixels are first brought down to 16 MP, which most forms and screens never notice; the result is then compressed to under 1 MB.
Is my image uploaded?
No. It is compressed in your browser and never sent to a server. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
