  2. Pick a quality, or type the size you need in KB.

  3. Download the smaller file.

What fits in 500 KB

PictureAs JPGAs WebP
A detailed camera photo, 3:2about 3000 by 2000 pxabout 3940 by 2620 px
A head-and-shoulders portrait, 3:4the whole photothe whole photo

Measured at good quality (80 %) on two real photos. Plain backgrounds, signatures and drawings fit far more pixels; busy pictures, such as leaves or crowds, fewer.

When 500 KB is asked for

  • Upload limits on websites, apps and online forms.
  • Email attachments, so several photos fit in one message.
  • Large images for websites that should still load quickly.

Tips for 500 KB

  • Most photos only need a slightly lower quality to fit, so the pixels stay as they are.
  • A very large photo (from a high-resolution camera) may need to be made a little smaller in pixels.
  • As WebP, a detailed photo of about 3940 by 2620 pixels fits.
  • For the web, a photo rarely needs to be wider than 2000 pixels; resize it first for an even smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress an image to 500 KB?

Choose your image and press Compress: on this page the size is already set to 500 KB. Then download the smaller file.

Will the file be exactly 500 KB?

As close as it can get without going over. ChobiKit tries different qualities and keeps the best one that stays under 500 KB, so the file may come out a little smaller.

Is 500 KB counted as 500,000 or 512,000 bytes?

Forms differ, so ChobiKit keeps the file under 500,000 bytes, which passes either way.

Will I see a difference at 500 KB?

Rarely. A detailed 6-megapixel photo (3000 by 2000 pixels) fits at good quality, and a whole 8-megapixel portrait fits as it is.

Why won't my image get under 500 KB?

It has too many pixels for 500 KB even at the lowest quality. ChobiKit then offers to make it smaller in pixels and tries again. Cropping away what you don't need helps too.

Is my image uploaded?

No. It is compressed in your browser and never sent to a server. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Ready when you are
