What Instagram accepts
Instagram's Help Centre says it keeps a photo at full quality when it is 320 to 1,080 pixels wide and its shape is between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall). A photo outside that range is cropped to fit, and the profile grid shows every post as a square.
| Widest | 1,080 by 566 pixels, 1.91:1 |
|---|---|
| Tallest | 1,080 by 1,440 pixels, 3:4 |
| Width kept | Up to 1,080 pixels |

Why a square with a border
- A panorama, a tall screenshot or a group photo goes up whole, with no one cut off.
- The grid shows the whole picture too, since the post is already square.
- A blurred border made from the photo itself looks natural; white or black looks clean.
Other shapes
Type 1080 by 1440 for the tallest post Instagram keeps whole, or 1080 by 566 for the widest. The photo still fits inside, with a border only where its shape differs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I post a whole photo on Instagram without cropping?
Choose your photo: Whole photo is already picked and the size is a 1080x1080 square. Choose a border, press Resize and post the downloaded photo. Nothing is cut off.
What size should an Instagram post be?
Instagram keeps photos up to 1,080 pixels wide, from 1.91:1 wide to 3:4 tall. A square of 1080x1080 works for every photo and for the grid.
Which border looks best?
Blurred fills the space with the photo's own colours, so it looks like part of the picture. White suits bright photos and art, black suits night shots and films.
Can I crop instead?
Yes: choose Crop to fill, and a square box picks the part to keep.
Will Instagram lower the quality?
Less: at 1,080 pixels wide Instagram doesn't need to shrink the photo. Upload from the app, not a chat, so the photo isn't compressed on the way.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is resized in your browser and never sent to a server, not even to the site you are posting to until you upload it there yourself. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
